Does anyone know the parent company that runs the Stop 'n' Stop on Whalley? There are always bicycles parked there, either awkwardly hitched to a railing, or with their front wheel locked to the antiquated wheel rack, which offers very little protection against theft. Clearly, the management can afford to install a bike rack for less than the cost of one parking space in the vast ocean of asphalt next to the store (which, I note, is never as full as the bicycle area)?

Previously, an official from the City had indicated that they would speak with Stop & Shop about the situation.

I think this may have happened earlier, when the store opened and there was actually no bike rack at all. Given the situation it would be great if someone could now follow up and ask the company to install a correctly-designed rack.

I sent a message to Stop and Shop corporate regarding this issue. I await their reply.

Might I suggest driving a car to do your grocery shopping? How much stuff can you carry on a bicycle? Maybe Stop & Shop is discouraging bicyclists because they don't purchase enough.

detour01, I understand the utility of using a car. But don't underestimate the utility of using a bicycle. I can carry three large grocery bags by bicycle -- one in the front rack, one in the rear rack, and one in my backpack. I own a car but I almost never bring it to the grocery store, because there is almost never a need. The problem with cycling to Stop n Shop or Edge of the Woods is not the bicycle itself, but the hazards posed by speeding motorists on Whalley Ave and the lack of secure bicycle parking at the stores.

detour01, recent studies in Toronto and other cities have shown that visitors arriving to stores by transit, walking and bicycling spend significantly more money than those who drive.

Perhaps this is because, according to the National Building Museum, each instance of car ownership sucks about $7,000 every single year out of the local economy (and even more than that out of the pocketbooks of residents who are forced to use them for everything).

They say that if a city could reduce car ownership by 15,000 cars -- exactly what Washington DC did between 2005 and 2009, and easily possible in New Haven -- it could inject $127 million dollars into the local economy. That's no small change, but it's unlikely to happen anytime soon unless we remove the physical barriers to cycling and walking.

The city will look into the matter further and follow up, but to be clear, this is private property so it falls on the owner to make or improve upon accomodations. The department can install bike racks on public property, so if there is a need for bike parking in the vicinity, we can inspect the location and accomodate if the site meets approval.

If you mean the original (rusty) wheel stand, they replaced it with a new _|_ style rack a few weeks ago. it is the same type as devils gear puts out front. It is not the greatest, but better.

Shoppers need decent bike racks, otherwise it is easier to drive there than to walk or bike.

There are great racks at the new Elm City Market - probably one of the reasons why it has become a popular destination for cyclists.

No change. I'm one of the people who lock to the railing, as it's the only way to lock the proper parts of the bike. I've seen other people lock to the shopping carriage corrals, as those also have steel in the right places. And yes, the bike racks at Elm City Market are properly designed. I've personally raised this as a comment on Stop & Shop website; never got a reply.

Somebody asked how much people can carry on a bike. I have a cargo bike and bring home gallons of milk, a twelve pack of beer, four bags of groceries, and a kid (soon two). Most people don't carry that much in their car. I will say straight up, that it's easier to do that at Elm City Market, even though it's a farther ride for me.

It's sad that this still hasn't been addressed, after years of the store being open. Perhaps the store managers don't realize that cycling is one of the primary modes of transportation in New Haven's center.

Has anyone spoken to Dwight Development Corp about this? Aren't they still the property owners?
