  • Latona St Philadelphia, PA - Passyunk Square
    Cheesesteak wrappers, soda cups and cheesefry sleeves are strewn through the entirety of South Philadelphia, emblazoned with logos that make it easy to point a finger at the two biggest culprits. Pat's and Geno's need to provide more waste receptacles and should donate resources to aid in the trash clean-up that's organized by the Passyunk Square Civic Association.

    There's a black Mercedes SUV that everyday is parked either in the crosswalk, or in between the crosswalk and the parking sign on the southeast corner. it has florida license plate E89 4??. It also has a PA 'Police Business' sign on the dashboard. I'm not sure what police business it has blocking the cross walk for the past month (and more).

    Also, if you go into google street view, you can see it illegally parked in the crosswalk too! Who knows old that is. I'm including that in the photo too.

  • 809 Federal St Philadelphia, PA - Passyunk Square
    A wall on the NW corner house on 8th and Federal is falling over. It is on the Federal Street side of the house. Presently, a neighbor has a 4 x 4 pinned to a construction horse holding the wall up. This is the same house where windows have fallen out and the roof has bowed down and is caving in. Oh, and it also has a huge gaping hole in the sidewalk where the bilco doors used to be...which is now covered by some plywood. And the awning is hanging on by a thread. But I don't think there is any ruish to do anything just yet...I mean no one has been killed there yet so don't worry about it. Wait until the wall collapses on a small child and the City makes national news as the pull a dead kid out from underneath the rubble.

    On the southeast corner of 8th and Manton, a condemned house was recently demolished. Woohoo!

    But now, the dirt lot is being used for parking. Boo! This is not only creating a mess -- mud and dirt all over the street and sidewalk -- but also creating a hazard to pedestrians and an eyesore to neighbors.

    I'm not positive, but I'm pretty sure there is a permitting process that has to happen to turn a zoned residential property into a parking lot.

    Further, I think there are some regulations about keeping empty lots fenced off.

    So, this is a ZBA issue, an L&I issue, and a PPA issue.

    I know I know, parking in South Philly, enforcement, blah blah blah. At least it's on record now.

    The second floor window has broken on this house and shards of glass are everywhere in front of the house on the sidewalk and steps.

    There is a house on the North side of Wharton street, one lot East of 9th that has been abandoned for years.

    The weeds in front of the house are about 2 feet high. The weeds and the stairway are a dumping ground for garbage mainly from customers of Pat's & Genos. It's utterly disgusting to have something like this right next to a major tourist draw.

    Recently windows have been broken and then boarded up. Rats are being attracted to the mess out side and are routinely seen running out from the stairway.

    L&I was at the property yesterday, boarded up the dangerous entry points to the building and posted a No Trepassing sign. It's a start but more needs to be done.

    This property is on the corner of 8th and Federal Streets. This property is very large with a garage and could be a wonderful addition to the neighborhood if it were not vacant. This house too is in violation of the doors and windows law. It is a frequent target of graffiti, loitering, and trash.

    Between 906 Ellsworth St. and the garage closest to the corner there is an abandoned house. It shelter quite a few homeless people. This place has become a haven for drug use, prostitution, and violence. This place needs to be boarded up immediately! It is also smells terrible and the urination and defecation in the street needs to stop now! What a nice neighborhood it's a shame nothing has been done up to this point.

    Christpher's Auto Parts uses the triangle at 8th & Passyunk as a private parking lot. Cars are often double and triple parked out into the street making it dangerous, if not impossible to cross the street. The cars are often parked in so tightly around the business that a person, let alone a baby carriage, can't get between them to get onto the sidewalk. Cars patronizing this business often park illegally at the entrance to the 700 block of Ellsworth, making it impossible to turn onto that block. They often totally block the entrance to Ellsworth. I have never seen a ticket, in many years, on any of these cars. Why do Center City businesses have to obey the law but not South Philly businesses? The Parking Authority could make a fortune if it spent some time south of Washinton Avenue.

    The abandoned building on the NW corner of 8th and Federal is now being occupied by squatters and last night bombed with graffiti. There is also litter and liquor bottles on the premises. It is a disgrade that nothing has been done with the property and an embarrassment to the neighborhood.
