CT Livable Streets Campaign

  • 1450 Chapel St New Haven, CT 06511, USA - West River

According to this article as well as earlier conversations with the City, the planned sharrows and bike route signs (which had already been delayed by a year) were scheduled to go in last week.

Does anyone know what is causing the delay?

It is almost impossible to walk along the south side of State Street at this location. The overgrown foliage reduces visibility of pedestrians and forces people to cross to the north side to get through.

Who is responsible for trimming the trees and weeds here?

  • Edgewood Ave. At Howe St. New Haven, CT 06511, USA - Dwight

Car was speeding at about 50 miles an hour down Howe at 8:15PM this evening. Ran right through the red light at Edgewood. Luckily there was no oncoming traffic at Edgewood because the car did not slow down at all. Was traveling too fast to get an identifying information.

Is this within the area that the Yale Police does traffic enforcement, or does the city do it here? It's unclear where the boundaries and different responsibilities overlap, and perhaps that's part of the reason for this extremely dangerous behavior.

I saw that in-road pedestrian signs have been placed all around Southern Connecticut State University. I saw several there this past weekend.

What's taking these so long for the one at W Rock & Edgewood to be returned to service?

    From the NHPD report, 3/16/10:

Two people were robbed on their front porch by an armed cyclist. At 9:28 p.m. on Monday, a man in a black ski mask on a blue and gold mountain bike rolled up on a porch at 167 Edgewood Ave. He asked the two people sitting on the porch for drugs. When they said no, he pulled out a black semi-automatic handgun, pointed it at the victims and said, “Give me what you got.” The two people handed over a purple iPod, a black Sidekick cell phone, and $1.50 in change. The robber rode off west on Edgewood.

The amount of speeding and red light running at this intersection is obscene.

Cars are speeding past at rush hour more than 20 MPH above the limit, amidst crowds of pedestrians and other vehicles. The red light signal is not obeyed.

It is only a matter of time before a driver loses control and kills or injures several people, as has happened recently at similar intersections (like Crown & College). The very poor pedestrian visibility at the corners, inadequate lighting, and use of line crosswalks rather than the more effective zebra-style crosswalks, only makes matters worse.

Can some police enforcement be added here as a temporary fix, up until the time that the intersection can be rebuilt to a higher standard? Is it even possible to stop red light runners here?

Ultimately, the intersection should be redesigned, like many in other US cities have been, so that travel at more than 15 miles per hour becomes uncommon. I've posted details on similar issues in New Haven about how raised and tabled intersections have been widely used in cities like Boulder, Cambridge Massachusetts, etc.. They have been proven to be extremely effective - not to mention much more cost-efficient than regular police enforcement.

Given that this is in the heart of campus, if Yale University is serious about making sure that students, staff and faculty are not continuing to get injured and killed every year, it should consider pushing the city for a redesign as soon as possible.

Please post here if you have more information about the shooting. You may post information anonymously.

Also post if you have ideas on how to reduce violent crime in the neighborhood, especially on this block. Is more lighting needed? Dwight sees somewhat elevated violent crime rates when compared to the city as a whole.

    News excerpt:

"NEW HAVEN – A 29-year-old man was shot to death early this morning on George Street in the Dwight neighborhood, police said. It was the city’s fourth homicide this year.

"Officers went to the rear of a home in the 500 block of George Street at about 3 a.m. and found the man, whom police did not identify, suffering from multiple gunshots wounds, police said in a statement released just before 11 a.m. today."

Several of the lower-level pole lights on this block, e.g., in front of the Wine store, are not working properly.

This is a major pedestrian corridor and the lights need to be on at night if this city wishes to attract and retain businesses and residents within the area.
