Description
In the past two months there have been a number of car break-ins. My in-laws' window was broken when there was absolutely nothing in sight in the car. Every week or two I notice more shattered window glass along the curb (indicating yet another car break-in).

Two vehicles broken into in my driveway within three months. Neither reported since, really, what do the police care? (And I don't fault them, they're overloaded and undermanned with far more urgent issues).
The recommendations in the local paper were that people use common sense and hide/remove their valuables. Neither of our vehicles contained anything remotely of value.
The resulting glass of the broken windows has led to injuries to neighborkids and pets, but the biggest impact is that I have lost all trust or respect for New Haven residents.
The next time the Edgewood neighborhood patrol is recruiting, I'm applying. I'm not going to put up with this type of crap in my town.

Jacob,
1. If you don't report these incidents to the police, you guarantee that they won't do anything.
2. You say that the police don't care, but I know that Lt. Hassett has acted directly on your behalf twice. First, when he told me to contact you, and second when he approached you in front of your house as you were taking out the trash, gave you my email address, and told you to contact me about the Chapel-Ellsworth block watch.
3. If kids and pets were injured, it's your fault because you didn't clean up the glass on your property.
4. I told you about the April meeting of the Chapel-Ellsworth block watch, you said you would attend, but you didn't show up. If you're "not going to put up with this type of crap" in your town, you have to do something yourself. Our next meeting is May 18, 7:00 p.m.

John,
I'm a bit taken aback. That wasn't me who posted the comment to which you responded, but someone posting under the handle "Edgewood." The attitude toward me was completely unnecessary and inappropriate. I have been involved in meetings in my own neighborhood, have spoken with Lt. Hassett, and regularly clean up garbage and broken glass on my block.
Regardless of to whom you intended to speak, I think the adage that one "catches more flies with honey than vinegar" applies.
Best,
-Yaakov

Yaakov,
My apologies. I thought you had written a second post after a second break in. I'm sorry about the mistake.

Edgewood,
I urge you to report these crimes when they occur. Lt. Hassett is very much concerned about them. About two months ago, at a community meeting, Alderman Paca brought up the problem and mentioned that he was working on solutions. Perhaps you could be in touch with him as well as Lt. Hassett?

Edgewood,
Here are the email addresses for Lt. Hassett and Alderman Paca, respectively: rhassett [at] newhavenct [dot] net, ward24 [at] newhavenct [dot] net. Also, I believe the Whalley-Edgewood-Beaver Hills management team meets on the third Tuesday of each month at the Whalley police substation, but I recommend confirming this with Alderman Paca.

Is it the third Tuesday of each month as indicated above?
Thanks, I would like to attend.

Hey John,
You might want to add the meeting as a community action item to solve this problem.
Its on the issue page on the upper right.

Hey Ben,
I created a community action item for our block watch meeting. Thanks for the tip.
